Redshift Mousetrap Pedal Adapters: Solving the "Permanent SPD" Curse

Stop balancing sneakers on tiny clips: The Redshift Mousetrap Pedal Adapters turn your "always-on" SPD pedals into functional flats in seconds.

Let’s be honest: once you commit to SPD clipless pedals, they tend to stay on your bike forever. Whether you have one "do-it-all" rig or a stable of bikes, they’re likely all fitted with those familiar metal clips. They’re great for power and control, but they create a major headache the moment you aren't wearing cycling shoes.

We’ve all been there. You need to zip to the local shop, meet friends at the pub, or take a mellow cruise with the family. You don't want the "click-clack" walk of cycling cleats, but trying to balance your favorite sneakers on tiny, slippery SPD pedals is a recipe for a bruised shin.

You’ve probably thought, "I need a dedicated flat-pedal bike" or "I should swap these out for flats today." But let’s be real - nobody is breaking out the pedal wrench for a 10-minute ride to the store. You’d rather just walk.

Say no more. Redshift has arrived with the solution: the Mousetrap Pedal Adapters.

Small, simple, and surprisingly smart

The design is pure "why didn't I think of that?" engineering. They weigh next to nothing and feature built-in magnets so they snap together when they aren’t on your bike. This makes them incredibly easy to toss into a frame bag or a jersey pocket. Plus, they come in a variety of colors to add a little personality to your casual errands.

Redshift clearly hit a nerve with these; from what I’ve seen, they practically sold out of the first batch immediately.

Installation: as easy as it gets

Installation is "dead easy" - you won't even need the manual. The moment you engage the clip, you’ll understand the name; they snap into your pedal mechanism just like a mousetrap. No tools are required to put them on or take them off. It’s a literal five-second job to transform your bike.

Design and durability

The design is minimalist, and the material feels incredibly sturdy. If you’ve used other Redshift products (like their ShockStop stem), you know their engineering is top-tier. These feel like they’re built to survive years of being tossed in bags and snapped onto pedals.

The ride: know the limits

Let’s be clear: this is not a replacement for a dedicated flat pedal. Even Redshift specifies they are meant for easy terrain, and I agree. While you could try to ride some light gravel, I wouldn’t recommend them for anything seriously demanding.

There isn't enough aggressive grip or surface area to rival a true MTB platform. The Mousetraps are designed for those "in-between" moments - and for that, they are brilliant. They make the ride enjoyable and "clip-free," which is exactly what you need after a cold one with friends.

A pro tip (and a genius hack)

The first thing you’ll notice is that because of the weight distribution, the pedal will naturally flip upside down, leaving the platform underneath. It takes a second to find your rhythm, but you'll be flipping them over instinctively at red lights in no time.

My technique: Move your foot in front of the pedal, use your heel to flip it back, and let your foot land on the platform. Job done.

But if you want the ultimate setup...

Buy 4 platforms. I thought I was a genius when I came up with this on my test ride: you can actually install two Mousetraps on each pedal! Redshift obviously anticipated this, as you can buy a 4-pack (two pairs) at a discount. This turns your clipless pedals into a true "pedal sandwich" with a flat surface on both sides. No more flipping required!
