I recently got my hands on the Redshift ShockStop PRO Suspension Stem, and let me tell you, it's a game-changer. This upgraded version of Redshift's original suspension stem is a remarkable piece of engineering, boasting a 15% weight reduction and a sleek, premium finish.

Box contents: the main piece, installation wedge and key, user's manual and a set of elastomers.
Unboxing quality
From the moment you unbox it, you'll know this is a solid piece of gear. The attention to detail is evident – no rough edges, just high-level engineering. I particularly like the subtle black-on-black branding; it's cool without being flashy. Plus, all the necessary tools and clear instructions are included, so you can jump straight into the installation.
Installation & customisation
The instructions are incredibly thorough, making the installation process smooth. Redshift includes a special installing wedge and various elastomers of different "sponginess," which is fantastic. There's no one-size-fits-all setting for suspension, and this allows for personalized comfort. The manual provides a helpful starting point with a recommended setting, but be prepared to experiment a little to find your optimal suspension level.
For me, it took about 40 minutes to get everything just right and adjust my handlebars back to the perfect position.
First ride impressions: a revelation
Just like my experience with a suspension seatpost, my first impression was a resounding "wow, this thing really works!" I took it for a spin on some gravel tracks, and it dampened the terrain almost like a suspension fork.
Now, it's not exactly the same as a suspension fork. Forks work closer to the point of impact, while the ShockStop PRO works closer to your hands. It's an interesting sensation, especially if you're used to suspension MTBs. There's a certain level of bumps where it won't be enough – think rocks or jumps around 10cm high (like dropping off a curb). But up to that level, it's absolutely brilliant.

A remedy for long hours on bumpy roads
During that initial ride, I stopped and swapped the elastomers to make it a bit more stiff. When climbing hills on tarmac, I felt like I wasn't transferring energy through my arms as efficiently as without the suspension stem. This adjustment made a huge difference! So, as I mentioned, don't forget to bring the installation wedge and Allen key with you for your first few rides to fine-tune your settings.

My Sonder Camino's cockpit after upgrade. Looking good👌
Who is the Redshift ShockStop PRO For?
This suspension stem is an excellent investment for:
- Gravel riders who struggle with the lack of suspension, especially on long rides where wrists and arms take a beating.
- Bikepackers! The stem performs exceptionally well when your handlebars are loaded with bags. There are those moments when you just can't lift the front wheel high enough with all that weight, and this little device significantly alleviates the impact on your hands. I tested this on a recent trip, and it made a noticeable difference.
- Road cyclists could also benefit, particularly in areas like the UK where roads are far from consistently smooth.
