U3 folding e-bike review + DISCOUNT CODE

Recently, I had the opportunity to get my hands (and legs!) on another e-bike from iScooter. This time, it's the U3 folding bike sold at a very attractive price (£349.99 at the time of writing). Read on to discover if it’s a smart investment.

Assembly Time: Ready to Ride in Minutes

The bike arrived in a box. A rather heavy box, I might add, which initially suggested it might be cumbersome to assemble. I anticipated a challenging process, but I was pleasantly surprised! Literally 10 minutes later, I was outside my house, doing laps down the road. It's truly simple. As a folding bike, you simply take it out of the box, and it's incredibly easy to put together, even without consulting the manual.

One crucial thing to remember before your first ride, though, is to check the tire pressure. Mine was slightly deflated, which significantly impacts the motor's performance and effectiveness. It's a quick check that makes a big difference.

U3 e-bike: Solid Build, Comfortable Ride

The U3 feels sturdy and solid. All the clamps fit nicely, providing a reassuring sense of security. While the wheels are small, the tires are quite thick, which prevents any feeling of instability, even on dirt roads. A suspension fork effectively mutes shocks from uneven surfaces; even riding off a curb feels comfortable, thanks to its excellent performance. The disc brakes are also very good – not overly aggressive but highly efficient.

The seat is exceptionally comfortable and equipped with springs to absorb bumps, working remarkably well. There's also a second seat over the back wheel, which could be suitable for a teenager or for carrying a passenger for short distances. Personally, I'd prefer to see this seat replaced with a standard rack or a basket for shopping. It's a possible modification – just unscrew the seat, and with a bit of creativity, you could attach an alternative, perhaps even with bungee cords.

The handlebar is well-designed and narrow enough to navigate morning road traffic easily. It features profiled grips that are very comfortable to hold and aid in operating the throttle button and display – the main control unit for the motor modes.

The Motor: Power When You Need It

The electric motor is integrated into the back wheel, offering three modes. First is fully manual, for those who want a proper leg workout. The assisted mode provides power up to 15 km/h, offering a pleasant boost when you need it. The full electric mode can take you up to 25 km/h, which feels surprisingly fast. I often found myself switching between the second and third modes. The assisted mode is fantastic when you want to enjoy the ride and pedal a little without breaking a sweat, while the full electric mode is perfect for speedy cruising.

The official U3 specifications state a range of up to 50 miles, which might be achievable on flat roads with minimal load. Realistically, on hilly terrain, it's closer to 20 miles. While not extensive, this is generally sufficient for most weekly commutes or a day-long joy ride along the beach. The U3 comes with a charger that can fully recharge the battery in approximately 3 hours.

What It's Like to Ride: Pure Enjoyment

In a word: FUN! Hopping on is effortless, as the frame is low enough to simply step through. Then, you power it on, push the pedal, and you’re off! It feels great riding on both paved roads and gravel. The kickstand is strong and easy to engage, making frequent stops hassle-free. Both the handlebar height and seatpost are easily adjustable, allowing you to find the most comfortable position for your height and arm length. Both wheels are equipped with mudguards, so you don't have to worry about getting dirty in wet conditions.

Who Is the U3 Bike For? A Versatile Companion

I can envision many uses for this bike. Commuting is an obvious one, as are trips to meetings in town. Given its affordable price, it’s not a bike you'd constantly worry about when securing it with a lock in town for a few hours. I'd take it fishing along the canal, or to the shopping mall. You can fold it up, easily put it in the car, and take it to the beach for a leisurely ride, or even for a joy ride in the forest. Riders of any age or fitness level will find this bike to be a great form of transportation, and perhaps even a gateway to ignite a passion for cycling. While it is quite heavy, its features offer excellent value for the price. Check it out here.

P.S. I also reviewed the U2 City Commuter. If you're considering something with a longer range, be sure to check out that review here
